Chapter Twenty-One
Hope
My stomach is full, the fresh blood and flesh leaving me warm and more than ready for a nap, and I’m laughing as we walk back toward the others. I feel lighter now after my talk with Edric, and while I haven’t figured out how I’ll handle the increase in my need to feed, knowing that the others will help me deal with it, helps me breathe easier.
We’d both listened for a good five minutes to our surroundings before we set off back toward where we’d left everyone, and I’m confident that there’s no one but a few BCs wandering around. But even those are about a mile east of our current spot where we’d skinned and packed the remaining deer meat into Edric’s shirt to carry, and I take the time to just relax.
Edric has kept our journey back lighthearted, revealing a dry humor that makes even the most mundane things he says come off as hilarious, and I barely notice how quickly we walk.
Giggling as Edric chuckles at my side, his mention of the day Sophie rolled down the ledge of the hill cracking me up, I’m clutching at my ribs from all the laughing as we finally reach our base for the night and step through the unlocked door. A voice I’d recognize anywhere sounds before me, and my head whips to the side so quickly that my hair smacks Edric across the chest. I don’t even stop to apologize though as I propel myself through the air, ignoring how Edric has stiffened in alarm, and jump right into the waiting arms of Daddy Jude. It’s so good to see him again that I don’t even realize tears are trickling down my face until his laughter shakes me as he hugs me back.
“Hello, sweetheart. I told your mother you’d be home soon. Didn’t expect all the snot though. Don’t tell me you’re getting soft out there with these boys. If you do that, who’s gonna keep their butts whipped in shape?” he says, and I laugh through my tears.
Pulling back to see his face, I look up into his sparkling eyes and snort. “Daddy J, you know better than that, you trained me after all,” I reply but the smile stays stretched across my face as a throat is cleared at my side.
"I like to think that we all trained you. Not just Jude, though he'd just love to claim it. Do you think you could spare a hug for the rest of us, though? It's been too long."
Twisting around, I meet Dad’s face, note the
